Beagle Health

Beagles belong to the dog breeds with only a few health problems that seem to appear more often. To minimize the probability of having to deal with health problems in the future, make sure you buy your puppy from a reputable source. Responsible Beagle breeders screen their dogs for problems and do not reproduce individuals with larger risk of health problems. You can also influence the health of your dog in a large scale, by using quality food with the right ingredients. Regular check ups at your local vet are also mandatory in order to prevent serious health problems resulting from an untreated illness.

The most common health problems that Beagles are prone to are : Epilepsy, Hypothyroidism, Dwarfism and Disk diseases. Other problems include ear infections and a range of eye problems. Most of these ear and eye problems can be prevented with proper care. As an active dog that spends a lot of time outdoors, pretty much any Beagle suffers several smaller injuries during its life. You will have to deal with parasites too, especially fleas, ticks or tapeworms. Again, these are all problems you can avoid with proper care.

Beagles are typical eat-all dogs, so you have to watch their feeding properly or they can easily develop obesity. An obese Beagle can suffer several health problems and will live shorter.
